I used to use a text file as my notebook on the computer, and would dump all sorts of stuff into it. Bits and pieces of things I would need later, numbers, URLs, partial blog posts, etc. It was pretty useful even though it was simple; I just had to scroll to find what I needed.
Recently, I tried out a couple of applications that you could think of as the same text file, but with tabs. So I was able to organize my bits and pieces into different notes. That also seemed like a good idea so I shifted my notes over to that and used it for awhile. The problem with it that the organizational capabilities make it more bloated than a simple text file.
Now, I’m trying out the same thing on a wiki. I think a wiki is the most inconvenient method, because I have to keep it open in my browser. Plus updating is a pain (yes, writing notes into a wiki is a pain). But it hasn’t reall bothered me. I’ve found that I haven’t been using my notes that often anyways (maybe because the last approach wasn’t very convenient). The convenience of the wiki method however, is that my notes are now accessible online, which is one less thing tied down to the computer I’m working on.
