I had plenty of sleep due to spending a lot of time on planes during the waking hours, so I watched Cowboys & Aliens on my flight from Amsterdam to Washington. This movie is about cowboys in the wild west taking on…aliens. The premise is unbelievable and an excuse to do a movie (I like more down-to-earth-topics such as movies about a man flying around in an iron suit), but it’s a summer blockbuster so it’s not a big deal.

Cowboys & Aliens star Harrison Ford as a grizzled war veteran and Daniel Craig as a mysterious cowboy, who starts with amnesia and whose past you learn about as the movie progresses. Although it seems like there are two main stars (or at least that’s what I remembered from advertisements), Harrison Ford really plays a supporting role. Daniel Craig runs around, learns about his past, learns why the aliens are here, saves the girl, recruits some people to fight the aliens and then the humans win as expected.

There are the usual elements in this wild west movie: Indians, bandits, romance sub-plot, etc and with such an outlandish premise, you would think there would be more crazy stuff happening; but it feels like it follows a formula, and plays itself through in about 2 hours. Perhaps the movie would have been more exciting on the big screen instead of on a small TV embedded within a seat, but for me I give it 2 out of 5 stars.
