Do people like, still blog?

I’ve decided to start a new photoblog. Yes, I am already part of one in Hot Photatoes, which if you’re an avid follower of, would find that I only post sporadically on (ok, very rarely – maybe once a month). So what makes me think I can support a photoblog by myself?

I think the problem with Hot Photatoes was that it became its own beast. We tried to make it a great photoblog, like the many on the web; by only posting great photos. The quality vs quantity argument comes into play and so while I have thousands of pictures, I didn’t have nearly enough that achieved the level of quality I thought was worthy of posting. Then there was the desire to post every day. I think that ended up being too much pressure and so it was easier to ignore the responsibility than to actually follow the schedule.

So how is my new photoblog going to solve this problem. Well, I’m not really thinking about it as a photoblog per se. Every photo tells a story, so I’m using a photo as the launch pad for a small story, a critique or an observation. It’s like the reverse of most bloggers, who attach a small photo to their post; I’m going to attach a small story to each picture. I’m not going to be adamant about posting something new every day; I’m just going to post whenever I feel like it, just like this blog. Quality also goes out the window, who cares if it’s a good picture or not.

So I’ll give it a try and see how long it lasts. Does this mean Hot Photatoes is dead? Maybe, maybe not. There are still a bunch of people in the group who might still post pictures once in a while (RSS is your friend), and once in awhile I might end up with a neat picture that I’ll post up there. You never know.
