For a guy who thinks that city views from up high are a tourist scam, I end up going to these places quite a lot (see Eiffel Tower and Taipei 101 as examples). In Chicago, there are two such views, one from the Sears Willis Tower and the other from the John Hancock Center.
Late in the afternoon, we finished the Magnificant Mile and arrived at the Hancock and went up. However, the trick that we read about is to not pay the $$$ and go up to the 94th floor for the observatory; but to go up for free* and enjoy the view on the 95th floor with alcohol to boot. The * is that you have to pay for drinks that are about $5 overpriced.
Maybe it was because we went on a Sunday but we didn’t have to line up to go up nor wait for a table. It’s a good place to go and worth it if you want to have a rest and a drink. We sat facing the south side, which I think is the more interesting side. You can see the financial district and the Willis tower in the distance.
