Hastily wrote a lazy Top Music of 2020 so that I would have a record beyond a Spotify playlist. Even though I didn’t spend a lot of time listening to the radio in a car, I feel like I have a good handle on the Top 40 hits of the year.

  1. BTS – Dynamite
Not a fan of BTS, but this song is undeniable catchy and worthy of being one of the top songs of 2020
  2. Finneas – Let’s Fall In Love For The Night
A “new-to-me” song for 2020 (I think it was actually released in 2019). I wouldn’t know Finneas if he wasn’t Billie Eilish’s brother; but he seems to be a songwriting talent and it shows in this song.
  3. Miley Cyrus – Midnight Sky
I guess this is an example where production and (hired?) songwriting resurrected an album.
  4. Dua Lipa – Don’t Start Now
For my tastes, Dua Lipa (and The Weeknd) were the biggest music acts of the year, and this first single off Dua Lipa’s second album kickstarted this year for her.
  5. Arizona Zervas – Roxanne
Didn’t get a ton of airplay but it caught my ear
  6. Yukika – Soul Lady
Discovered this song near the end of 2020. Apparently it’s in the genre of ‘City Pop’ which appeals to my musical tastes.
  7. BOL4 – Dancing Cartoon
BOL4’s went through a split up this year, and their recent songs haven’t reached the highs of their debut songs. I liked the b-side on their single more.
  8. Miley Cyrus ft Dua Lipa – Prisoner
Two of the top female artists of this year. I suppose Miley saw Dua Lipa’s success earlier in the year and asked her to feature on this track.
  9. Calvin Harris, The Weeknd – Over Now
    Great Michael Jackson vibes
  10. The Weeknd – In Your Eyes
Hard to rate this one, it’s catchy with the 80s vibe, but there’s nothing particularly noteworthy about it. I guess you can say that it is a perfect Pop song.
  11. DJ Khaled ft Drake – POPSTAR
Kind of ashamed to like this song and rank it so highly, but the hook is attractive.
  12. Dua Lipa – Levitating
I could probably put half of Dua Lipa’s album on this list (honorable mention: Physical, Hallucinate, Fever) as her songs are a satisfying mix of intriguing vocal timbre and retro dance beats
  13. DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper, Lil Wayne – I’m The One
I don’t know how each of these artists collaborated on this song, who who’s singing which part; but I like the overall result.
  14. The Weeknd – Blinding Lights
Started off great at the beginning of the year but ended up overplayed.
  15. Taeyeon – Kiss Me
Obligatory Taeyeon OST ballad. Not her best, but passable to fill a need
  16. Tones & I – Dance Monkey
One of the first hits of the year and so overplayed that it feels like it’s from a few years ago now.
  17. IU ft SUGA
This song was hyped because BTS’ SUGA produced and featured on it. I don’t actually think it’s that strong of a song (although it grew on me as I listened to it more).
