Today, being the day after American Thanksgiving and thus Black Friday in the States, makes me wonder why Canada doesn’t celebrate this capitalist tradition. For those that don’t know (i.e. Canadians), Black Friday is the US replacement for Boxing Day (yes, they don’t have Boxing Day sales apparently). Think PS3/Wii lineups, but for plasma screens, laptops and DVD players. It’s kind of funny, but fitting, that Americans follow a day of family gatherings with everyone waking up early and hitting the malls for shopping shopping shopping. Whoops, Canadians do that too.
Anyways, I think Black Friday makes much more sense than Boxing Day since you can get your bargains and then wrap them up for Christmas gifts. In Canada we do the reverse. If you really want a good deal on a present, you give an I.O.U., to be redeemed after Boxing Day. Doesn’t make much sense does it? Good thing that we’re so polite that we can accept that.
