I’ve been keeping track of the good singles of this year in preparation for my Top Music of 2006 list. One thing I’ve noticed is that over a period of time, the rankings shift; which isn’t really surprising. Some songs are great when you first hear them but eventually are overplayed and become normal. Some songs don’t sound so great but grow on you.
Looking back at my previous Top charts, it seems that I made my 2005 list too quickly whereas I put more thought into my 2004 list. I can tell because the top 5 songs on my 2004 list are still very good in my mind and significantly better than the rest of the singles. My 2005 list is weird though, for one I can’t believe I left Coldplay’s Talk off the list. That should be #1 on the year. I would also put my #5 song, Sum 41’s Pieces as #2 now. The remaining top 3 are still pretty good, and should belong there.
So I’m trying to avoid this shifting and put some thought into my 2006 list. Hopefully, when I look back in a year or two it won’t be too out of wack.
