I finally scored an invite to Vox. Vox can be thought of as Xanga for adults, or Livejournal meets Web 2.0 (in fact the people behind Vox, SixApart owns LJ). For awhile, I was anxious to get in on the beta preview, but now that I’m on, I am somewhat underwhelmed.
The concept behind Vox should be pretty useful, it has privacy controls built in so that you can blog certain things to the world, friends and/or family. Something that YouTube also does. The problem with Vox is that it is primarily a blogging service and not much else (sure I can share media on it). When I already have a bunch of other services like Facebook, Yahoo 360, etc that can do all sorts of fancy social networking stuff plus blogging, why should I join yet another service that has more limited functionality?
I see Vox getting popular in the way that Xanga is, if you can get a group of close friends using it. But right now, being an early adopter, there’s no real reason to use it aside from getting an awesome URL (like http://k3v.vox.com/). Plus, it doesn’t import existing syndication feeds, so I can’t mirror my blog on Vox.
