I’m on my third (or fourth) generation of hockey superstars. I remember growing up to the likes of Gretzky, Lemieux and Messier in their primes (Hawerchuck and Hull being some B-lists stars). As they slowly left their glory days, I watched the likes of Sakic and Kariya (Shanahan and Pronger being some B-list) come into their prime. I think there was maybe a brief third generation with the likes of Iginla, Lecavalier, Thorton and there is definitely now a generation following those, comprised of Spezza, Staal and Crosby. Looking back, it was easy to distinctly see the first two generations, but the latter ones may not be distinct. Maybe they will become one in the future with only certain players being truly great.

Of course there are players from countries other than Canada, for example Jagr, Federov, Selanne, Forsberg, Sundin in the second generation; and Datsyuk, Ovechkin, being part of the newer generation.
