Last week, Jeb and I were googling the same text beside each other on the same network and we got different results for the same search text. That was weird, but I think I figured out the reason; it’s because I default to google.com using my browser shortcut for search, whereas going through the site would take you to google.ca. So Canadians and Americans see different results. Political bias? nah.
Speaking of political bias, seems like there is an outcry in the red states because if you google failure on google.com, you get Bush’s biography on whitehouse.gov as the first result. It’s certainly funny, and Google’s explanation of this google bomb doesn’t sound like they will or want to fix it.
On a more local front, I’m getting a lot of referrers from google for steeped tea. Why? because i posted about Tim Horton’s Steeped Tea commercial. You’d have to search google.ca to see my result on the first page (I’m on the second page on the US search), so I guess there is a proper bias considering that I am a Canadian blog talking about a Canadian topic. Now of I used some SEO technique, I could actually be the number result on a useless topic.
