over the last little while, i’ve been pirating fewer and fewer mp3s. that’s not to say i’m scared of the CRIA or want to live legally, i’m just tired of downloading badly ripped or bad quality mp3s. i have high standards (joint stereo 192kbps at least), and most mp3s i find aren’t ripped at that standard. so i’ve moved to buying cds that have tracks i like and ripping them. that doesn’t mean that i don’t download new hits anymore when i can’t find a good deal on cds, i do but i also like the quality of my alt-preset-standard rips.
when it comes to ripping cds tho, i have a dilemma. i’ve found that most people collect albums, and as such music organizing software like itunes or winamp is expecting that people organize and listen to their music in albums. i don’t. i’m a singles guy so i only rip the few tracks i like. i don’t want to rip an entire cd if half of it is crap nor do i want to waste hard drive space storing them nor do i want to spend half my time listening to them (although you can get around that my meticulously rating all your mp3s).
