i don’t know what to make of google’s new ad sense program. it’s meant for small webmasters (like me) to put ads on their site and actually get paid for them. best of all, it’s really easy. it reminds me of the good old days when everyone thought online advertising worked; you could hardly go on a page without seeing a banner ad. which means that it’s a bad thing when it looks to me like history is going to repeat itself. instead of banner ads everywhere, google’s going to replace the banner ad industry in its entirety and text ads will appear everywhere. hopefully some webmasters have learned their lesson and will continue to provide advertising-free content (like yours truly), but the lure of easy money can quickly overcome your ethics. at some point in time, i’m sure surfers will learn to ignore text ads the same way they do with banners regardless of how targeted they are. they’re already pretty inconspicuous so it’s not like people will have to try really hard. plus, it’s always best to find a site where people provide content because their interested in it, not because they’re out to make a quick buck.
