i don’t really like hip hop, well every once in awhile there’s a song i like but given the choice i would rather listen to something else. i can think of two reasons why i feel this way. one is because i don’t consider it music, but rather spoken words over beats; rappers seem more like poets (although generally more coherent) than musicians. i say this because a lot of the big hits usually sample from some catchy, old track that their target audience never heard of. it’s clever; their uneducated listeners would never be able to tell the difference and they end up thinking that these rappers are pretty good musicians.
secondly, they don’t portray themselves as musicians but rather sell themselves based on a lifestyle. i bet the majority of people who say they like hip hop like the fact that rappers have money, power, a posse, etc. if you make them listen to old school stuff like run dmc or what not, they’ll prolly go wtf is this.
both the rappers and their record companies know this so they try to stay on the edge of cool. before it was with chinese characters and dragons, you had that i know kung-fu coolness. now it looks like they’re pushing hindu music. i haven’t really figured out why they think that would be cool, i mean if you’re new to hindu music you would prolly think it’s weird and not like it; so why would they want to sample it?
this whole commercialization just turns me off. in a way, it’s sad that a lot of the hip hop fans are being used by the rappers, but i bet it happens to all of us in some way or another.
