you know, i tried not to comment on apple’s rumored purchase of universal music but when i read articles which suggest that apple will bring a new approach to the music business, i keep thinking that it’s just a lot of wishful thinking. don’t get me wrong, i think that apple embodies it’s think different slogan, but owning a record company doesn’t mean that they can change the philosophy of the people working there.

it’s publicly known that an artist does not get the majority of the revenue from record sales, that money is filtered down to the producers and what not. if apple decides to lower prices and to distribute over the net (which is different thinking than all the other record companies), there will be less money to go around. will those high-priced guaranteed-top10-hit producers want to work for $5,000 at universal or $1,000,000 at sony? do you think the hits will keep rolling out? (well, they could pay off radio stations to only play their hits but that’s a blog for another day)

i think the problem with the industry is less the way the music is distributed, but how the people in the industry expect to be treated. unfortunately, a technology company named apple would be hard pressed to change that.
