someone has written up a nice explanation of what i call phantom traffic (which i guess isn’t really phantom traffic at all since it exists). but he goes into a nice analysis on how to solve the problem and such. i was actually just thinking about something similar to this today. i’ve been on many, many buses that are “phantom full”; as in people crowd around the rear doors instead of moving all the way back (so everyone has to fit within the first section of the bus). now this is understandable because people don’t want fight thru a crowd to get off the bus. of course i think it would have made more sense (and would solve this problem) if they put the rear doors at the rear of the bus. then people would move to the back of the bus instead of crowding the middle when the driver says to move back.

two interesting links today: 1) new 5.8ghz cordless phones don’t have any inherent improvement over the 2.4ghz ones. it’s all just a marketing scam so you’ll feel the need to upgrade (like computers). 2) apparently on tv, there’s a really cool michael jordan commercial where he plays a game of pickup against his younger self. there’s a lot of technology used in it and it seems to work out pretty neat.
