It’s been awhile since I mentioned some of the Android games that I’ve been playing, aside from a quick mention due to some that I bought during sales. Here are some more that I tried out and my thoughts:
- Edge – Skip
I bought this one on sale (25¢ I think?) but I regret it now. Initially it looked fun due to its cleaniness and simple game play, but I just never got into it because I’m not interested in the gameplay, nor in attaining a high grade in completing the level - Ichi – Skip
Ichi is a one-button puzzle game that I got free from Amazon. Your one button changes the direction of surfaces upon which a ball will bounce and the point is the collect all the rings with the ball. It looked like it would be fun, but I couldn’t be bothered with solving the puzzles. - Gyro – Skip
I tried this one out because it was promoted on the front page of Google Play. It’s a really simple game where you have to rotate a disc so that the colored ball lands in the same colored section of the disc. It’s such a simple game that I wish I came up with the idea; it can’t be that hard to write a game like this! Unfortunately, it’s not fun…so I don’t really understand why it has such a high rating nor why it’s being promoted heavily. - Jetpack Joyride – Give it a try
I originally downloaded this game because it was by Halfbrick, who’s Age of Zombies game I enjoyed (this one is featuring the same character). It turns out that this game is currently an Amazon store exclusive. It’s a really simple game (fly jetpack, collect coins, avoid things that kill you) and it seems to exist to satisfy the vicious cycle of play->get coins->buy stuff. You can short-circuit this cycle with in-app purchases to give you coins of course. But I ended up playing this a lot because it was mindless with goals (unlike Gyro) and have almost accumulated enough coins to buy whatever I need. - Major Mayhem – Give it a try
This game uses the exact same concept (play to get coins to buy stuff) as Jetpack Joyride, but is a more “deep” game (you take cover and shoot enemies). Maybe playing one game of this type is enough, but I don’t find this game as fun. Alternatively, maybe it’s because it is not mindless enough. - Zen Bound 2 – Skip
I bought this game on sale (25¢ I think) because it had beautiful, photo realistic graphics. The goal is to wrap an object in rope, and as you wrap it, it will become colorized. It wasn’t fun either so I didn’t play it much. - Monopoly – Good if you like Monopoly
I bought this as a free app on Amazon awhile ago but didn’t play it until I got a larger tablet. As a Monopoly implementation, I have no complaints and it does it well. But after playing this several times, I think there is too much luck involved in Monopoly to make the game fun. - Neuroshima Hex – Give it a try
This is game I found out about on BoardGameGeek and is thus a board game. I tried the lite (free) version and while it was easy I thought potentially it could be fun based on the game pieces. So I spent the 99¢ and bought it. On a 1v1 level, it doesn’t seem to be very hard; but multiplayer adds a wrinkle and makes it challenging. I’m still learning the game so I’m not sure whether it’s balanced and/or fun. - X-Men – Skip
It’s the same X-Men game that you may have played in the arcades in the 90s, or on XBOX360 a few years ago. It was free on Amazon so I bought it, even though I already had the XBOX360 version. It plays the same, and the game is still made to eat your (virtual) quarters; so I can’t say that it’s bad, it’s just not a fun game anymore. - Hamlet – Give it a try
The concept of this game is that you are a time traveller who accidentally swaps places with the real Hamlet, and now must take his place to complete the story. You do so by solving puzzles, but I tried it and I got stuck on the very first puzzle so I gave up. Neat and intriguing concept though…
Whew that was a lot of games! I should remember to do this more often
