I downloaded a bunch of games recently (partly due to Google’s sale) and finally got around to trying all of them:
- Townsmen 6 – I already blogged about this one
- Checkers – A freebie from Amazon and I’m not sure what provoked me to download it. It’s Checkers with no frills or thrills.
- Clouds & Sheep – This is another game by the same people as Townsmen 6 (HandyGames). It’s an open-ended game where you have clouds and sheep and you can make them interact with each other. You can zap sheep with lightning or make new sheep etc. It’s one of those games that you look at and go “neat” or “that’s cute”; but there’s no real game play and I’ve already uninstalled it.
- Great Little War Game – I originally thought this would be cute and fun, but the voice effects aren’t actually that cute and it’s not that fun. You build troops, move them around and blow up the enemy. It is made a bit more difficult due to restricted paths that your troops have to go through (which might be a function of the screen space) so a lot of the game is trying to streamline your troop deployment to the target area so you have enough forces to do battle with. That part is not that fun! Plus it’s a battery hog and has caused my phone to hang several times. I want my dime back!
- Guns’n’Glory – Another one by HandyGames. This is basically a tower defense game with a Western theme. I knew that when I bought it and so I’m not expecting anything new. The difference is that your towers are cowboys so they can move around. Otherwise, it seems to play like a tower defense game and is thus not bad but not great.
- HeliumBoy – Another game that I thought might be cute or fun but was mistaken. In this one, you guide/float a boy with helium balloons through levels to try and pick up stars, but avoid birds and ninjas. The “3d” graphics look like they are from N64 time frame and the controls are slippery – which makes it frustrating to do fine maneuvers around pointy beaks. I couldn’t even make it past the first level! Fortunately, it was free form the Amazon store.
- Majesty – This sounded interesting because you don’t directly control the heroes in the game (they’re like NPC) but instead provide incentives and motivations for them to do their good deeds for your kingdom. I tried playing it, but it just seems too complex to get into! It might be a waste of 10¢, or maybe I will be more inclined to try it when I have fewer games to play.
- MiniMini – I actually downloaded the demo for this game and haven’t bought it. It’s a Korean game (I can’t read the text) but because the game is simply a collection of small games, you can get the hang of it pretty easily. The demo gives you three of their games, and all of them are pretty entertaining and novel. Worthwhile to try the free demo, and maybe worthwhile to pay for it (but I bet they use the most novel games for the demo).
- Reckless Racing – I thought it might be fun to buy this game as there is a lot of drifting involved. In the beginning, I found the drifting a bit hard to control, but once you get some experience, you have a better idea of how it works. The problem with this game is that it is just not that fun. I suppose I was hoping for a Micro Machines type experience, but the drifting adds to much variability. They do have a separate mode of play where you have to pick up items and deliver them within a set time frame, but again the difficulty in controlling the car takes away from the fun. It’s because of this that I didn’t even think about buying Reckless Gateway which was on a subsequent day of the Google sale.
- Slice It! – I downloaded this for free from the Amazon store because it is a well-known game. It’s pretty straightforward, and polished; although I sometimes have hard times lining the lines up where I want them to be. The problem with this game is that I’m just not too interested in playing spatial puzzle games. I’m sure it will be fun for some people (just like, well the opposite of Doodle Fit), but for me it feels like a chore to play.
- ZENONIA – This is a classic RPG for Android and iOS, which I figured I would buy because there have been 2 sequels (so they must be doing something right). It actually plays a lot like a console RPG, with some minor tweaks; so I wouldn’t say it’s great or that its bad. It does have a weird levelling/experience system in that it makes it quite hard to grind levels (perhaps it’s because I picked the Assassin class). I end up dying a lot and it’s not that fun then.
