after reading this article regarding diamonds (from 1982!), i was surprised how the De Beers’ ad campaign socially engineered their success. They sub-consciously manipulated generations upon generations of people to buy diamonds and to prevent them from selling their old diamonds. The whole thing seems very shady and unethical, yet there was never a big controversy over it!
and this resulted in my first post at metafilter! it didn’t really work out as planned tho…i kind of phrased my post so that the question didn’t really tie in with my statement…when i wanted people to discuss my statement (but every post seemed to have a question so i put one in). well that and the discussion kind of wandered off…
