On Friday night, we headed down to Niagara Falls and visited the TD Rink on the Brink. If you’ve never heard of this before (like me before we went), it’s a skating overlooking Niagara Falls! Which is pretty scary if you don’t know how to stop because you can go barreling over the falls without a barrel.
At least that’s what they want you to think. In practice it is much less exciting. Here’s a look:
There’s actually a road separating you from the falls, and you can’t actually see the Falls while skating (well maybe just a glimpse of the American ones in the distance. To make matters worse, they charge you admission to come skate, and it’s not like the Toronto or Markham Parks & Rec prices, it’s $8 + tax on top! It’s almost $20 for a couple if you bring your own skates! I suppose it’s an experience, but not very good value for money.
Since we already spent the effort to drive down, we spent the night in the US. On Thursday night, I bid on Priceline and got the 3-star Holiday Inn in Amherst for $36 (+ ~30% tax…). That seems like a great deal, but I think I could have done better. I screwed up in bidding because I operated under my (normal) intention to get the best hotel. In this case it was a 3.5-star. But that actually messed me up because I had to (re-)bid higher for a 3-star one. I think I might have been able to get it for $30 instead!
On Saturday, we did some random shopping. Usually we have to travel pretty far away to find some wacky food, but we found some neat stuff at the Walmart. There was dessert flavoured gum and this:
Only 15 years after the Barenaked Ladies wrote about it, we have prewrapped bacon! We’re all millionaires now!
