I was listening to Z103.5 (formally known as Hits 103.5, a.k.a. Hot103.5 back in the day [i.e., my teen years]) driving home from work the other day. I do on occasion listen to radio stations other than MIX99.9 and 104.5 ChumFM, because they do play pretty bland music. When I want something more cutting-edge, I listen to Z103. If only they 1) played less hip-hop/reggae, and 2) ran fewer commercials; then I would listen to them more often.
Anyways, I do listen to it to see what the cool mainstream kids are listening to nowadays. I caught a song on the Top 6 at 6 which sounded a lot like Mariah Carey. As you may know, Mariah Carey has shed her good-girl image of the early 90s to become just another R&B artist (the downfall started with Heartbreaker, blame Jay-Z). I couldn’t say for certain that it was her because the song was missing her patented faux desperation voice.
It turned out that I was listening to Mariah’s first single from her forthcoming album ironically named e=mc2. Touch Your Body has the production and writing to make it a perfect song in the vein of Nelly Furtado’s Promiscuous and Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie (except for that part where Wyclef comes in a bar too late wtf). It’s a good pop and a good slow song, it has samples that make it attractive like those in Jordin Spark’s Tattoo (the high pitched cooing), it doesn’t overuse the vocoder effect, and it has decent lyrics. It looks like a huge summer hit!
