I had meant to see Crash for awhile and finally bought it at a Chinese mall, and finally got around to seeing it. It is much like Magnolia (who I have been meaning to see again) where a bunch of characters and storylines are merged together into a cohesive plot at the end. The difference with this movie is that it takes place in Los Angeles and discusses the social tension of a multi ethnic society (much like Toronto is).

In L.A., there are whites, blacks, hispanics, and those of Middle Eastern descent; each with stereotypes about each other and stereotypes about themselves. Crash illustrates these stereotypes, and how many of these minority groups are hypocritical about racism.

I enjoyed this movie for the frank depiction of how things are, the only complaint I have is of the happy ending. Well, it wasn’t really happy per se (one of the plot lines ended well, and it was snowing at Christmas time), but because of the issues discussed, I think it should have ended in a tragedy overall. Also, I think there were too many storylines and some of them weren’t really wrapped up (i.e. the white family). Because of these factors — mainly that the story could have been more striking, I rate this movie 4 out of 5 stars.

Sidenote, I think it’s movies like this (multi-plot) that Everything Bad is Good For You believes our society is getting cognitively smarter.
