My desktop computer is a pain in the ass now, while I really only use it as a file server and thin client, i still “use” it frequently. My most recent problem is my hard drive. I’ve had it since I built this computer and it weighs in at a hefty 20GB. I really only use it now to host my OS+apps, transient data files and some personal data like documents (oops).
Over a recent thunderstorm, i think it was the one around Canada Day, the hard drive started having bad and unreadable sectors. Eventually I couldn’t boot anymore and tried to reinstall Windows. Of course that didn’t work either because I couldn’t format the drive properly.
So after all this struggle, I said forget it! and moved whatever I could to a hard drive I had bought a few years ago and installed Windows on that drive. I thought about buying a new hard drive but i figured that I would buy a new computer when Vista comes out. So for the next few months I will live with a dorky secondary computer.
I suppose I should be more worried about data loss, but I think I have most of the stuff backed up on CDs and for the other stuff, oh well I probably will never look at it again.
