The term experience economy was coined in the late 90s and is now being used to describe the subtle shift on how we are spending our money; on (extraordinary) experiences rather than materialistic items.

While the linked article talks mostly of people whose discretionary income would exceed mine and a dozen of my friend’s combined annual income (well we’re students), I too have noticed the same trend occuring in my habits. While another camera or the latest gadget would be neat, I would much rather spend the money travelling for photo opportunities or attending trade shows to see what new gadgets are coming out.

Although the reasons behind my change may not be the same as society’s. I see it as a conlfluence of several factors; having enough stuff, growing up, and needing to expand my horizons. Which is all great, but the pre-requisite is still, and as always, money.
