i made an impulse buy at sonic boom on the weekend; i had meant to go there to get ted leo & the pharmacists’ latest album shake the sheets (which as an aside i had downloaded it like four months ago and thought it was out already), but when i got there i ended up getting the arcade fire’s funeral.

now i’ve heard the single off it, neighbourhood #2 (laika) and while being pretty good, it wasn’t really the sort of music i listened to everyday. i also downloaded the album and heard hype about the band through mp3tennis. so i think i did a pretty good job previewing the music, and when i bought it i wasn’t disappointed with it; it is a pretty good album and the band has a large mix of different instruments.

i’m just surprised that pitchfork gave the arcade fire album 9.7 out of 10! most of the other hyped stuff that they’ve reviewed like interpol or modest mouse (i don’t like this album at all) got in the 7-8 range (franz did get a 9.1). so what’s so good about funeral that i don’t know about?
