basically, we all don’t have 8 megabit connections to the internet not because there isn’t sufficient capacity in the network, but because of the last mile problem. the telco companies want to make a profit (perhaps to offset their losing business division) by restricting the ability (thru cost or avaliability) to get an internet connection to your home; you have very few companies to choose from, all of which have lobbyists in high places. it’s just another example of the growing problem we have in society when powerful corporations can put undue pressure on policy committees; which is very similar to ted turner’s beef with big media.
