one thing that i’ve neglected for a few years but picked up again recently is comic book reading. back during high school, i used to spend a bunch of money on comics every month, and i didn’t have that much money to spend. i followed a few series; image for the most part but a smattering of marvel as well. aside from the fact that it gave me something to read and an excuse to not go home after school, i think i kept it up because there was a lot of t&a in image comics!

now in my second go around, i’ve discovered two things: i don’t really care much about the t&a anymore (they’re cartoons for goodness sakes!), and comics aren’t necessarily just for kids. yes, you have your normal superhero save the world stuff, but you also have mainstream comics that deal with current topics such as corruption in corporations (ie wildcats 3.0).

i think it all started with batman. batman was always a brooding character but his comics also dealt with dystopic societal issues. there were several batman series that were more mature than your typical comic fare, and as the comic book audience grew older, we found these type of books more interesting.

over the last year or so, i’ve read several mini-series where i go “wow, this is so good”, i’m surprised that writers can fit such depth and commentary into a medium with as little text as a comic book. so while the rest of you people watch farenheit 9/11, i’ll stick to my superman comics. they’re easier to read and more fun.
