when i’m in toronto, my book of the moment is laura lee’s pocket encyclopedia of aggravation. it’s written very much in the style of the worst-case scenario set of books, where common aggravations are listed in alphabetical order with explanations of why they’re so annoying or how they work. the explanations are not too indepth and are sometimes common sense but overall the book provides a nice summary of many common problems that people have in daily life that are otherwise hard to explain. because the book is broken up into small 2-3 page articles, it’s an easy book to pick up, flip to a random page and read for 5 minutes while waiting for other things. altho the form factor does not make it suitable for a coffee table, it’s the right size to carry around in your coat pocket for the unexpected moment when you wonder why the other line is always faster or your foot is asleep.
