sony’s releasing an itunes music store competitor next year. anyone want to bet that it’ll use the atrac3 compression format, the same proprietary one they use for the minidisc players? it’ll be like beta vs vhs and memory stick vs other flash memory all over again. they should really keep the format in its md niche market instead of trying to push it on everyone, but i guess they haven’t learned their lesson yet.

sonicstage is the software sony forces you to use to convert songs into atrac3 format. also similar to itunes, it also organizes your music library. i bet that sony will force you to use sonicstage to buy and organize your music. the only problem is it’s the worst. software. ever. it crashes my xp machine every time i convert mp3s or wavs into sony’s format, it crashes when i’m writing to a minidisk, it crashes even when i’m just navigating the menus! the worse thing is that the crashes aren’t all “safe” xp crashes, half the time it doesn’t even blue screen, it turns off my system. this is xp for goodness sakes, this stuff isn’t supposed to happen. as you can tell i’m very frustrated by this piece of shit, so hopefully sony will fix it.
