i wasn’t all that impressed by daft punk’s initial cd, homework although there were a few well-known singles off that album such as da funk and the annoying, yet catchy around the world. they seemed like a fringe electronica group with a cult following that i was not a part of (à la sneaker pimps).
then they released their second album, discovery which i thought was one of the best albums i bought in 2001. the first four singles were amazing and were also the first four tracks from discovery. each song was unique from the more clubish one more time to the robotic dancing digital love of gap ad fame.
as each single was released, they also released a video with an anime theme which was the new trend started by korn and others. the video for their first single one more time, showed a crowd of blue colored, smurf-like aliens grooving to a popular (and also blue) band. it didn’t seem like much, but it was the first chapter to a developing story.
as each single was released, a companion music video was released that continued the story. but sadly, daft punk couldn’t be expected to generate 14 hit singles off of one disc, and the story ended after the fourth single. luckily for us, the concept of telling a story to the music of daft punk was not a whimsical idea and had been planned even before the first video was released, so the remaining 10 chapters in the story were not lost. since then, they’ve finished the remaining videos and the entire story with music to go along with it has been released as a dvd called interstella 5555 : the 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem.
