in economics, we learned that having rights over intellectual property was important because it gave an incentive to companies to invest money into innovation but it was never meant to give corporations a stranglehold over their creativity productions forever. when this happens, it actually stifles innovation; as a consumer, you get to purchase the same product over and over again. an excellent example was brought up by this engaging article on copyrights that i read:

“If just anyone could make a James Bond movie, MGM might invent some new heroes instead of churning out 007 flicks every 16 months”

capitalism built america, but the corporations that capitalism built will end up ruining it. america needs to figure out when information should be in the public domain and when it should be private.
