at waterloo, there’s a requisite fourth year design project where people attempt to come up with new & ingenious ideas, which will hopefully lead to a startup. but mostly, people just implement things that have been done before and there are few interesting projects. it says a lot for one of canada’s best engineering schools if all we can do is mimic. in the uk, there is a school that uses a similar as waterloo; they have workterms, and a fourth year design project. but unlike waterloo, their projects seem to be very clever. how about a mp3 playing goggles that beam sound using bone vibrations? maybe they just get more press, or maybe the quality of waterloo graduates isn’t as good as the university says it is. i suspect the latter. the new google toolbar has pop-up blocking! now it’s really indispensible if you use internet explorer. this up’s the ante for mozilla, microsoft must be happy.
