interesting article called robots without a cause which basically suggests that the majority of our newfangled gadgets actually serve to satisfy our techlust rather than increase our standard of living. in many ways this is obvious, we could still do everything fine with pentium 3’s, nor do we need videocards that let us play quake 3 at 200+ frames per second. it’s a lot of hype and marketing from big business so that we have a “upgrade cycle” on things we don’t really need to upgrade (like from 2.4ghz to 5.8ghz cordless phones). but on some things like wireless, i’m not sure if i’m blinded by techlust or if it will genuinely be useful. i’m not sure if there really are benefits from having accessible information all the time, how often would you need access to that information? it’s still up in the air whether wireless is a good nice-to-have like an emergency cellphone or if it will actually change our daily lives.
