wow, i didn’t realize i wrote so much the other day; it was more of a rant than a blog but that’s one of my goals when i rewrote my site — i wanted to be able to separate each post so if i were to rant i could link to the specific post on its own page (by using the permalink). newayz, it’s been awhile since the change and i still haven’t talked about it. looking back the change wasn’t that dramatic, instead of using static html files for my blog entries, i compiled them into a flat file (originally xml but that didn’t work that well) and whenever a page is called i construct the page from the entries in the flat file. i could use a db but a text file is easier to edit. this means that i don’t have to move my front page to my archive every month so it’s more convenient for me. it also means that i don’t necessarily have to show the current month’s entries on the front page, i only show the last 10 now. maybe someday i’ll implement a user preference area where readers can specify the font size the want (i know the text is huge compared to other sites but you’ll thank me when you’re old and squinting) and how many entries they want to see on the main page. i think the biggest thing that was lost was the lack of variety in design. everything is in the same design now and i did that partly on purpose as an exercise to see if i could live with it; but i will miss having a record of what designs i had. it’s actually a relief that i could get rid of all my sections and photos, i got kinda tired of keeping them all around so now i’ll start fresh, maybe i’ll add stuff that’s entirely different who knows.
