i’m not too sure what to think of mcdonald’s current promotion of offering one hour of wireless access if you purchase a value meal. i can see why mcd’s is doing this, it’s similar to how they’re offering healthier choices in hopes of attracting a wider audience, but this doesn’t seem to fit into my image of mcdonalds. when i think of mcdonalds, i either imagine a place full of kids running around or a ghetto location downtown where groups of …err ghetto people are loitering. neither of these are places where i want to be working on a laptop.

but the good thing about this is it makes wifi more ubiquitous. rather than limiting them to yuppie coffee shops, mcdonalds can expose a variety of people, from kids to the ghetto drug dealer, to the existance of wireless computing. that means faster adoption of the technology. think of the possibilities, it can be just as useful to drug dealers as cellphones. they could update their inventory on the go, make it accessible over the web, and tell multiple clients where to do business all at the same time.

notice that cool thing i did to the word wifi? if you haven’t, hover over it to see what happens. originally when i saw it, i thought that it was a css trick, but it turns out that the html 4.0 spec provided a couple of new tags to clarify acronyms and abbreviations. in the future, i’ll misuse these tags to provide definitions for some of the more obscure terms i might use.
