When Apollo was born, we had a name all ready for him. But for several months beforehand we were debating a lot of names. Picking a “good” name is important, and shouldn’t be a impulsive decision, because you’ll be calling it for the rest of your life! For me, I wanted a name that satisfied the following criteria:
- I didn’t want a common name – Kevin is pretty common so I wanted to stay away from ones that have been in use for the last 50 years
- I wanted a more trendy name – something with some attitude and personality. But names that *were* trendy, like Taylor, Madison, etc were trendy 5 years ago. We don’t really know what trendy is yet!
- I wanted a short name, but it had to be more than one syllable; my last name doesn’t work with single syllable first names.
- I liked ethnic/multicultural names. I hope my child will grow up with a globalized upbringing and hopefully this might spur his interest
- The name had to have a good meaning – this is where you check the name books
So in the end, after a lot of discussion and alternatives, we agreed upon Apollo. Hopefully all the “design” thought into the name is not for naught, but so far we like it very much.
