The Prestige is a movie about magicians, which is kind of a cheat when you think about it because it is amazingly easy to perform magic on a movie screen. Thankfully, the movie isn’t about magic itself, but a competition between two magicians in 19th-century England.
This type of movie doesn’t typically cross my radar, because it doesn’t have comic book heroes and isn’t a sequel, but I had heard of it because of its quizically good reviews when it first came out. I didn’t know that it was a Christopher Nolan film until later on when he became more well-known due to Inception and the Batman series. It was then that I took a flyer on this movie.
I’m glad I did because I thought it was very good. I expected it to be good, so the first hour and a half of the film did not feel worthy of the prize (although it wasn’t boring either). The ending however, knocked it out of the park. It is rather funny though, the loose ends aren’t all tied up (i.e., I felt that how they dealt with Scarlett Johansson’s character was too abrupt) and there is some great Willingful Suspension of Disbelief; but the ending still left me satisfied. I give The Prestige a comfortable four out of five stars.
