With only a few GB to work with on my new Win7 mini9, I tried to install as few apps as possible. I also knew from past experience what I would be using my netbook for so I didn’t have to install useless apps that I would hardly ever use. Here’s what I installed
- Firefox4 w/ AdBlock Plus and HTTPS Everywhere addons – Most of my stuff is on-the-cloud now (email, photos) so I just need a fast and secure browser. I don’t like Chrome because I don’t think it is mature enough; it doesn’t have enough addon/plugin support, nor being used by a large enough diversity of users. Also, with Firefox, I can specify my cache is written only to memory to minimize SSD wear & tear
- 7zip – For archive tools
- XnView – For image manipulation and viewing
- Filezilla – For FTP downloading/uploading
- puTTy – For website updates
- CutePDF – For printing
- VLC – For media playing
- Skype – For phone calls
If I do need anything else, probably the best strategy is to use a portable version and have it installed on a SD card.
