For lunch last weekend, we went with my parents to Lai Toh Heen, a Chinese restaurant on Mount Pleasant. I had heard of Lai Toh Heen as a fine dining Chinese restaurant even before the normal Chinese restaurants started upgrading their decor to “fine dining”.

While we weren’t the only Chinese family there, the clientele was from the local area – typically of caucasian descent. The waiters were relatively professional (they still had Chinese accents) and had to explain to their patrons what many of the dishes contained. We had some questions too because the dishes weren’t all typical.

Dim sum was about twice as expensive as you would expect from a Chinese places, and the variety is not as unique as other upscale Chinese establishments. Lai Toh Heen is a good choice if you want to enjoy Chinese food with flavour and presentation chops, in an environment where you don’t have to shout to be heard.
