Hey I blinked and the Grammys came and gone. Not only did I not live blog it like last year, I didn’t even realize it was on. Ok I’ll stop Kanye-ing this blog now.
Being a true geek, I looked up the list of winners on Wikipedia. It was no surprise to me that Amy Winehouse was the big winner having heard it on the news (which is how I found out I missed the Grammys). She won Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal, Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album; although half the awards seem like super sets of the other. Isn’t record and song the same thing? And if one wins the Song of the Year, shouldn’t they by default win any sub categories that apply, such as Best Female Pop Vocal?
Anyways, I found out a couple of cool things looking through the nominations:
- I had been kind of disappointed that Canadian radio played Dreaming With A Broken Heart (either that or Slow Dancing in a Burning Room) as the second single from John Mayer’s Continuum when I confidently predicted that Belief would be the second single. Well Belief was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal and was the second single in the US.
- I can’t believe Rehab was picked over Umbrella. I guess its the anti-hip-hop discrimination by the society at work again.
- Maroon 5 wins Best Pop Performance by Group thereby vindicating my questionable purchase of their album (yeah it was a weak moment).
- Justice’s D.A.N.C.E. was robbed by J TimberLake for Best Dance Recording
- Michael Bublé won for Best Traditional Pop Album, what the heck is “Traditional Pop”? An excuse so albums aimed at older audiences don’t have to compete against more POPular ones?
- Lang Lang performed at the Grammy’s? Weird. But that also means, he’s the most successful of the young concert pianists.
- I don’t think I’ve heard 1 song in the R&B field, same would have gone for Rap except they play Kanye’s Stronger frequently on the radio
- Before He Cheats won Best Female Country Vocal. The song has awesome lyrics and best of all, they’re audible
- Love, the Beatles compilation from the Cirque De Soleil show won best soundtrack compilation. Hard to beat a compilation from the Fab Four.
