I met up with some old high school friends last weekend for dinner and afterwards we headed over to Kennedy Commons to watch Juno. I’ve been hearing good reviews about Juno, being a more-serious Knocked Up from the girl’s perspective. Although I could be wrong since Knocked Up is still in my queue of DVDs to watch.
The story is about a 16-y/o teen, who gets knocked up by a bumbling, long distance running, not really sure what he’s doing, and not really boyfriend. She tries to take the route of getting an abortion but is talked down by a Chinglish-speaking immigrant, and decides to take the next best option; to give up her baby to a loving couple with problems of the baby-making variety.
The movie goes from there to portray Juno’s struggles with being a pregnant teen and how the perfect facade of the adoption couple is more than it seems. I liked this movie for its honest portrayal and believable characters, but the best part was its snippy dialogue, especially at the beginning. This might be the best movie I’ve seen all year, and much different than the previous summer blockbusters that I have had a steady diet of. Four out of five stars for Juno.
