When I was still in the midst of my Masters, I heard about a new research group starting up at MIT in the field that I was doing research in, Autonomic Computing. They were looking for PhD students to bring them fame for slave labour, and were offering a nice research assistantship for those students, so I said what the hey and applied.
Now, I hadn’t been playing the research game well, so I wasn’t banking on getting in. But, I suppose my application was well written, and I had decent references, and I received a offer! Wow, when I opened the letter, I couldn’t believe it! But then I realized I was in a tough position since I already started working.
You know, looking back on school, it sucked. But there are some good points, you’re in control and drive your own schedule, you can get (all expenses paid) trips to various places around the world, and you get paid for doing stuff that interests you (or at least you should be). Plus it’s not every day that an opportunity like this comes up, in fact it’s probably a once in a lifetime thing for me. So I grudgingly accepted the offer.
I guess the tough part for me is that I already had things pipelined, which now have to change because I have to move away from Toronto for a couple of years. There goes my plan for buying a place and moving out (well…not the moving out part). I wanted to take a sabbatical from my job, but the time period is too long so that wouldn’t work. Ahh so many things to work out in the next few months, so it’s a good thing I’m joking about this whole thing because otherwise I would just be blogging all about this.
